Essex Olympian League 2 Kent County
League 5
In the game played at Billericay on Wednesday
evening (14/3/07), Cray Valley's Matt Knuckey and Dean Flood scored
a Hatrick and brace respectively as the Kent County League came
from from 2-0 down to win the encounter 5-2.
Essex began the more lively and virtually dominated the opening period and
is was no surprise when skillful Romanian SENER SAUVI (Mountnessing) gave the
home side the lead with a rasping shot after 10 minutes. The advantage was
doubled midway through the first half when a clattering of bodies in the Kent
penalty area left Old Roan's 'keeper Carl O'Neil writhing in agony and Referee
Stuart Battye pointing to the spot. After a lenthy injury stoppage Craig Gilham
(Kelvendon Hatch) netted the penalty. 10 minutes later an Essex defender was
adjudged to have handled the ball in the other penalty area and Knuckey reduced
the arrears from the spot. On the stroke of half time a well directed corner
found Flood in the box who headed home to send the teams in at the break all
square. The first 10 minutes of the second half saw good efforts from Knuckey
and Old Roans Nicky Desanges pass the wrong side of the woodwork, but Kent
kept pressing and on 70 minutes a good flowing move involving a Cray Valley
trio of Flood, Phil Eagle & Knuckey resulted in the latter netting his
second. 3 minutes later Knuckey scored his third of the evening when he latched
on to his Club team mate Danny Lawrence's through ball. With just under 10
minutes remaining Bly Spartans Matt McHugh again showed his skill down the
left flank as he had done all evening and his cross found Flood unmarked who
tapped home Kents 5th. All in all a good performance, but for FA National League
System Cup purposes it came, unfortunately, three weeks too late.

FA National League System Cup: Semi-Final
Kent County League 1 Isle
of Man League 2
After excellent performances in earlier rounds of the FA National
League System Cup, the Kent County League representative side saved
an under-par performance for the Semi-Final visit of the Isle of
Man League on Sunday.
The match, played at Chatham, opened brightly with the visitors creating
the early chances with winger Chris Bass unlucky not to give them
the lead inside the first ten minutes. Whilst most of Kent's promosing
first half attacks were broken down by a well organised Isle of
Man defence, the lively front line of the visitors had to contend
with the brilliance of Milton Athletic's Chris Smith in the Kent
goal.
Cray Valley's Dean White had to leave the field through injury
and was replaced by Old Roan's Spencer Pollard, but Kent's defence
held out to send the teams in goalless at the break. Kent opened
the second period the brighter of the two sides and a first minute
header from Cray's Dean Flood crashed against the bar and ten minutes
later the same player was again unlucky when another effort screamed
just wide.
At the other end man of the match Smith continued to thwart the
visitors with many point blank saves, but even he could not
prevent the Isle of Man's Nick Hurt netting from close range
on 68 minutes.
Ten minutes later a fine move down the Kent right resulting
in a pin point cross finding Flood in space who fired the equaliser.
The final period was frenitic and, with extra time looming, in
the second minute of added time it was Hurt again who broke
Kent hearts when he scored his second to send the Manxmen into
May's final against Cambridgeshire who defeated the Guernsey League
in the other semi.
Looking back at the Competition the British Energy Kent County
League's Manager, Cray Valley's Mark Edwards and his squad, can
feel pride on reaching the last four of an FA National Competition
that commenced back in September with 33 entrants from Step 7 of
the FA National League System.
